Its bright f/1.4 aperture allows more light to reach the sensor and creates a shallow depth of field with attractive background separation. The STM autofocus motor provides smooth and quiet focusing, making the lens suitable for both photography and video.

The optical construction features 10 elements in 9 groups, including an ED element and a high-refractive-index element to help control chromatic and optical aberrations. The HD Nano multi-layer coating helps reduce flare and ghosting while maintaining contrast.
